Pets at Home sponsors National Pet Month!

We're delighted to have Pets at Home as a sponsor for this year's National Pet Month. Here's why they wanted to get involved.

Pets at Home logoIf you’re a UK pet owner, or a would-be pet owner, there’s a very good chance you have visited a Pets at Home store in search of pet goodies.

For all of us who love our animals, Pets at Home is a paradise of pet supplies, food, toys and accessories to help us look after our pets responsibly and have some fun along the way.

Founded in 1991 by Anthony Preston, Pets at Home now boasts more than 340 UK pet stores and earlier this year was voted the Sunday Times Best Big Company To Work For.

So, when the pet retailer committed their support to National Pet Month for the second year running we were absolutely delighted to have them on board.

“We’re passionate about pets and the themes that run throughout National Pet Month are at the very core of what Pets at Home believe and that is responsible pet ownership and the love and companionship our pets give us unconditionally,” explains Scott Jefferson, Pets at Home’s Marketing Director.

“For us it was a natural fit to sponsor National Pet Month for the second year in a row with our sister company Companion Care vets.”

So, just how will Pets at Home be celebrating National Pet Month?

Firstly, they have been holding free pet workshops for children over the Easter holidays, using fun, interactive activities in store to educate the next generation of pet owners on how to care for small furries.

Children attending the events received an activity pack filled with fun animal characters showing them how to keep pets such as hamsters, rats, gerbils and guinea pigs, happy and healthy.

There was also a ‘furry food challenge’ where children were quizzed on pet care, plus they were given the chance to create a hamster mask and ears and help meet and feed some of the stores’ small pets.

Did you go along? Got any pics? Why not share them with us and Pets at Home on our social media channels www.fb.com/NationalPetMonth http://www.fb.com/pages/Pets-at-Home/64543005371?cm_sp=LogosAllPages-_-Icon-_-Faceook

Throughout National Pet Month there will also be the opportunity to watch some free grooming sessions at Pets at Home stores to see how professional groomers carry out their work.

As this year’s National Pet Month theme is all about companionship, we decided to ask Pets at Home why they think our pets make such great companions.

“We believe pets are good for us and we promote responsible pet ownership,” says Scott.

“Not only are pets great companions and family members but there is evidence that they can help reduce stress in adults, help children learn about life and do better at school!

He adds: “Pet ownership is extremely rewarding for both pet and owner, but we believe that owners should always research and understand the unique welfare needs of the pet before taking on pet ownership. This is why we run regular events in our stores to advise new and future pet owners on how to care for pets responsibly.”

Pets at Home’s four week spring fundraising drive, which kicks off on April 17 – during National Pet Month – will be in aid of Support Adoption For Pets http://www.supportadoptionforpets.co.uk/ - a charity which aims to give abandoned and homeless pets a second chance at happiness. Look out for more info on this in the coming weeks.

As a major supporter of this year’s National Pet Month campaign Pets at Home are urging as many UK pet lovers as possible to get involved.

Scott says: “National Pet Month helps to raise national awareness of the joy of pet ownership and encourages pet owners to seek out advice from vets, pet specialists and other pet care professionals.

“We would recommend anyone thinking of getting a pet to take part in one of these National Pet Month events across the UK to learn as much as they can before taking on the responsibility of a pet.

He adds: “National Pet Month is also a great time to think about pets in a rescue or re-homing centre and to help raise much needed funds to find these pets a new forever home with a loving family.”
