Kingston Maurward College has been awarded National Pet Month’s ‘Best Educational Establishment Event’ for 2014. Chosen from events held all over the country, their certificate was presented by National Pet Month chairman Phil Sketchley on 20 October, when around 50 students took part in a session explaining the rationale behind the National Pet Month charity and learning about its top ten tips for responsible pet ownership.

Kingston Maurward College had celebrated National Pet Month in style with a fabulous Animal Festival Day “celebrating all things animal”.

Run mainly by the students, around 700 people came to take part in fun animal activities, and to get advice from and raise money for local animal charities as well as Julia’s House, a local hospice.

Phil Sketchley said: “The National Pet Month trustees liked the balance of fun and educational activities arranged at Kingston Maurward. They helped promote responsible pet ownership while fitting in with our 2014 25 year celebrations.”

Christine Rolfe from Kingston Maurward explained: “While we had to postpone our event to escape the worst of the weather, we were delighted with the turnout despite it still being a blustery day. Some of our activities were fundraisers for charity, while others helped demonstrate crafts that can benefit our pets. We had herb planting for example, to show the benefit to our rabbits and guinea pigs’ diets. And some events were pure fun, such as ferret racing!”

She added: “Visitors were able to learn handling skills, and meet and greet some more unusual pets. We were pleased to have the benefit of the advice from a number of charities and very pleased that our event raised around £700 to be divided amongst them, to support their vital work.”

Phil Sketchley added: “This was a true celebration for National Pet Month. We cannot wait to hear about plans for their 2015 event,” he added.

National Pet Month 2015 will run from 1 April – 4 May 2015.
