Calling young writers: share your animal adventures

Budding young writers have the chance to win some fabulous prizes for themselves and their school by sharing pet adventure stories to celebrate National Pet Month – April 7 to May 7, 2012.

Children are encouraged to send in real or fictional, original pet tales to be in with a chance of winning a copy of the new animal story The Great Escape, published by Puffin Books on 3rd May 2012, and receive a visit to their school by the book’s author Megan Rix.

Published on May 3, the book, aimed at over eights, is set on the eve of World War II and features the story of a lively Jack Russell, a faithful Collie and a feisty ginger cat who face a fight for their lives amid the backdrop of a country preparing for war.

To enter the competition all youngsters have to do is send in stories that can be real life adventures shared with pets or fictional escapades – whether funny, sad or somewhere in between. Closing date for entries is Monday, May 7, 2012.
The top 5 entries will be shortlisted, with a winner being chosen by author Megan Rix. As well as winning a copy of the new book, the successful young writer and their school pals can look forward to a visit from Megan who will talk about her writing and the startling true facts that led to the creation of The Great Escape.

This exciting competition is just one of all kinds of events being run to mark National Pet Month – a national celebration of responsible pet ownership involving thousands of animal lovers across the UK.

From amazing pet events to raise money for animal charities through to school lesson plan competitions, open days and celebrity interviews on social media, National Pet Month aims to spread the key messages of responsible pet ownership, the mutual benefits of living with pets, the role of pet care specialists and the value of working and assistance companion animals.

Launched in 1989 as National Pet Week, National Pet Month runs until May 7, 2012 so there’s still time to put on an event and register it at www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk Here visitors can also check out the interactive map to see what’s happening near them and find full details of The Great Escape Book Competition.
