National Pet Month – April 1- May 6, 2013 - needs you!

The involvement of veterinary professionals across the UK is vital to the success of National Pet Month. Here's how...

Veterinary professionals across the UK are being urged to get behind this year’s National Pet Month - April 1 – May 6, 2013 – and help raise awareness of the work they do to support pet health and welfare.

National Pet Month Chairman Phil Sketchley says the support of the veterinary profession is vital to the success of this national celebration of responsible pet ownership and believes every veterinary professional has an important role to play.

“National Pet Month relies heavily on the support and goodwill of the UK veterinary profession in helping to promote responsible pet ownership which is at the heart of our campaign,” explains Phil.

“With help from our veterinary colleagues we really can make a difference, not only by raising awareness about important pet ownership issues, but also by helping to raise cash for worthwhile local pet charities.

He adds: “At a time when many of these charities are finding it increasingly tough to survive, National Pet Month offers the chance for veterinary professionals to come together and help these organisations raise much needed funds so they may continue their good work.

“And practices have told us that they have gained new clients, not previously registered with any practice, who have been impressed with what they have seen at a National Pet Month event – a real example of helping to improve pet health!”

Following on from last year’s success, National Pet Month’s UK wide campaign has been extended for 2013 and features an exciting new theme - Your Pets and you: companions for life - which recognises and celebrates the benefits of life-long companionship for both pet and owner.

So, how can veterinary professionals help?

One of the easiest ways or raising awareness and money is to stage an event during National Pet Month. Perhaps your veterinary practice could hold an open day where people can see behind the scenes, organise some pet health talks or a microchipping day for dogs and cats?

What about staging a pet show, a fancy dress day or even a bake sale where your clients could make a donation for some lovely, home-baked treats?

Maybe you could speak to your local paper, TV or radio station about running a pet health awareness day to encourage your local community to talk about the issues surrounding pet ownership during National Pet Month?

Or why not contact local schools and see about giving responsible pet ownership talks?

There really is so much you can do to help spread the responsible pet ownership message – the only limit is imagination.

Register as a supporter on the National Pet Month website www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk and you’ll receive a free events pack featuring information on NPM’s key messages plus posters and tips on how to successfully publicise your event.

Here you’ll also find lots of information about National Pet Month’s 2012 campaign which raised more than £12,000 for more than 35 animal charities around the UK – a figure we’re aiming to beat in 2013.

“We can’t wait for National Pet Month 2013 to get underway on April 1 and look forward to growing our nationwide army of veterinary supporters. We really appreciate the support from our sponsors Companion Care Vets and Pets at Home who help make the whole month happen, and would be delighted to hear from anyone in the profession who would  like to work with us too,” adds Phil Sketchley.

National Pet Month, which began as National Pet Week in 1989, is a registered charity and grows more popular each year, with thousands helping to spread the key messages of responsible pet ownership, the mutual benefits of living with pets, the role of pet care specialists and the value of working and assistance companion animals.
